Standing at 30.16 meters (98.95 feet) tall, this impressive torii (Shinto shrine gate) was constructed in 1982 to commemorate the opening of the Jōetsu Shinkansen line. Modeled after the Ichino-torii (first gate) of Yahiko Shrine, it features a massive shrine plaque that's roughly the size of a small apartment or a large living room. As a Ryōbu torii (a type of torii with supporting pillars), it is the tallest in Japan. You can't help but be overwhelmed by its monumental size.
