Niigata is exceptionally well connected by Shinkansen, regional rail, and an extensive highway network. From Tokyo, the Joetsu Shinkansen brings travelers to Niigata Station in about two hours. Kanazawa is just an hour away via the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Joetsu‑Myoko, while Nagano can be reached in under an hour by train.
Within the prefecture, ferries connect Niigata City (Niigata Port) with Sado Island (Ryotsu Port). High-speed jetfoils reach Ryotsu Port in 1 hour and 5 minutes, and car ferries are also available. In addition, seasonal car ferry services operate from Naoetsu Port in Joetsu City to Ogi Port, with a travel time of approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.
