Seisuiji Temple: A Sanctuary in the Tranquil Cedar Grove
Tucked away in the quiet mountains of Sado Island, Seisuiji Temple is a historic sanctuary where nature and tradition exist in perfect harmony. According to legend, it was founded in 808 (Daidō 3) by the Buddhist monk Ken’ō, who traveled from Kyoto under the imperial order of Emperor Kanmu during the Heian period. For centuries, it has been revered as a sacred place of deep spiritual devotion.
Within the temple grounds stands the Guze-den, a hall modeled after Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera. Built in the dramatic kakezukuri style, the main hall extends boldly over a cliff, appearing to float above the forested ravine below—a breathtaking sight that captures the imagination. The principal deity enshrined here is the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Senju Kannon), and like its Kyoto counterpart, Seisuiji has long been a place of heartfelt prayer and reflection.
Come and discover a moment of stillness at Seisuiji Temple, where history, nature, and devotion intertwine to create a timeless spiritual retreat.
