Sennensake Kikkawa
千年鮭 きっかわ
This beautiful old store preserves and presents Murakami’s unique salmon culture, most famous for its surreal rows of hanging salmon.
Sennensake Kikkawa stands as a guardian of Murakami’s millennium‑old salmon culture, offering travelers an intimate encounter with one of Japan’s most enduring culinary traditions. Stepping inside, visitors are greeted by an extraordinary sight: nearly 1,000 salmon suspended from the wooden ceiling beams, slowly and naturally air‑drying in the same way they have for generations. The interplay of light, shadow, and the gentle aroma of curing fish creates an atmosphere that feels both timeless and deeply authentic.
The building itself is a cultural treasure. This traditional wooden townhouse—constructed approximately 130 years ago and officially registered as an Important Cultural Property of Japan—embodies the architectural character of the region. Within this historic setting, guests can freely explore the hanging‑salmon space and engage with knowledgeable guides who explain the unique preservation techniques, the seasonal rhythms of salmon culture, and the deep connection between Murakami’s people and their river.
For many international visitors, the experience goes beyond simple observation. It becomes a rare opportunity to witness living craftsmanship, understand the philosophy behind Japan’s food traditions, and capture striking photographs that reflect the spirit of Murakami’s heritage.
