During the Edo Period (1603-1868), Shiozawa-juku was a pivotal post town along the highway connecting Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Echigo (present-day Niigata, excluding Sado). It also flourished as a hub of textile production, a specialty of the region. The present-day Bokushi-dori Street faithfully recreates the picturesque ambiance of Shiozawa-juku.

One of the most eye-catching fixtures of Bokushi-dori Street are the “gangi” undercover passageways. These are made from buildings with roofs or eaves that extend over the street, providing shelter from the weather. Even in the midst of winter, you can explore the street without getting snowed in, granting a greater appreciation for the ingenious solutions for life in a region with heavy snowfall.
