Sado’s seasonal flavors in a historic port town that prospered through trade—a fusion of Shukunegi’s independent culture and French cuisine

Cuisine Anaguchi

Nestled in a quiet inlet along the Ogi Coast, the village of Shukunegi flourished as a key port of call for the Kitamaebune trading ships. More than 100 wooden houses stand tightly clustered along its maze‑like alleys, creating a townscape so distinctive that it has been designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan.

In the heart of this atmospheric village sits Oryori Anaguchi, a restaurant where the elegance of a traditional merchant’s residence meets the refined flavors of French cuisine crafted with Sado’s seasonal bounty. The building once belonged to Sato Izaemon, a wealthy shipping magnate who was listed among Sado’s most prosperous merchants. Today, the residence has been carefully restored, allowing guests to dine while overlooking a beautifully maintained Japanese garden.

The menu showcases the richness of Sado’s natural environment—fresh seafood from the surrounding waters, locally grown vegetables, and ingredients that reflect the island’s shifting seasons. Each dish is prepared with a delicate French sensibility, creating a harmonious blend of tradition, terroir, and contemporary technique.

Dinner is available by reservation only, and bookings must be made at least three days in advance.

A meal at Oryori Anaguchi is more than fine dining—it is an immersion into the maritime heritage of Shukunegi, the craftsmanship of its historic architecture, and the deep flavors of Sado’s land and sea.
