Jikoji Temple
慈光寺
Sat at the foot of the sacred Mt. Hakusan, this revered temple has been a spiritual haven for centuries. The majestic buildings and cedar-lined approach invite awe and reflection.
Jikoji is an ancient Soto temple (one of Japan’s sects of Buddhism) located at the foot of Mt. Hakusan, a spiritual center
of mountain worship. The grounds contain many buildings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including six
structures designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties, most notably the Hondo Main Hall. The temple is
incredibly well preserved and retains its original appearance.
Leading to the temple is a 500-meter path lined with cedar trees, some believed to be between 300-500 years old,
adding to the serene atmosphere. This beautiful landscape of towering cedars designated as Natural Monuments of
Niigata is the perfect setting for a calming stroll.
For those interested in deepening their experience, you can reserve Zazen (Zen meditation) and sutra copying (a
meditative writing practice) sessions in advance.
