Tucked away in the peaceful satoyama landscape of Tokamachi City, Ubusuna House is a restored thatched-roof house with more than a century of history, now welcoming visitors as an immersive art-inspired cultural space.

Inside Ubusuna House, you’ll find an Oribe-style hearth and a ceramic bathtub created by some of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic artists. These handcrafted pieces are thoughtfully integrated into the traditional architecture, allowing the house itself to breathe as a living work of art—quietly, subtly, and with a sense of harmony unique to rural Japan.

At the café, local mothers from the surrounding village prepare heartfelt regional dishes, each served on one-of-a-kind ceramic tableware crafted by the artists involved in the house. The rice—grown in Tokamachi’s terraced fields and cooked with meticulous care—arrives glossy, tender, and deeply aromatic. Every grain reflects the harsh winters, pure snowmelt, and the generous blessings of this snow country.
